Anishinaabe singer/song writer Annie Humphrey talks with Sprout during a writing camp for young women. During the camp, the young women from Inger, Ball Club, Prescott, Mission, and Cass Lake painted the canvas that would become "The Seven Teachings" tipi installation at Sprout in Little Falls, MN.

Annie begins the conversation talking about her work with jingle dresses. For more information on jingle dresses see the documentary film created by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and Twin Cities PBS called 'The Jingle Dress Tradition'.

Sprout MN is a food hub in Central MN looking to connect more local food to local people. The Sprout Mobile Market is a rural-to-rural initiative and grocery store on wheels that seeks to address access, affordability, and usability of locally grown healthy food in areas with barriers to access.

From June 1st to June 30th, we're raising funds to establish the infrastructure of the Mobile Market trailer with the equipment needed to keep local foods cool and fresh: Refrigerator and freezer, shelving, handwashing sinks, and more. Your contribution will help make this vision a reality: https://app.mnstarter.com/campaign/1

Thank you to Dancing the Land Farm (Clearwater, MN - dancingtheland.com) and Januschka Family Farm (Little Falls, MN - januschkafarm.com) for sharing your beautiful farms with us for this video.

Pelmeni, Siberian Meat-Filled Dumplings

Story Behind the Recipe

When Sarah was a Peace Corps volunteer in Moldova, her host grandmother taught her how to make them by hand, and Sarah has since taught her parents, sister, and me how to make them. It can take a couple hours to make a large batch to freeze, which leads to great family time and conversation. She has enjoyed being able to share this tradition both in Moldova and the U.S. and loves the fact that our three-year-old son, Charlie, really likes them and requests them regularly for supper.

The Recipe

Dough:
3 cups sifted unbleached all-purpose flour (can substitute up to about 1/4 with sifted wheat flour)
1 scant teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1 cup cold water

(This may need to be doubled but see first how far you can get with one batch before making a second.)

Custom Harvest Table by Tusk Metalworks

10/4/2017

Miguel Mahlich of Tusk Metalworks talks about his art installation of harvest tables. The tables are each eight feet long with benches, creating a 50-foot picnic table for future harvest dinners at Sprout and where Growers & Makers Marketplace shoppers can sit, relax, and watch cooking demonstrations while enjoying lunch, beverages, and entertainment. The harvest table displays Mahlich’s creativity and skill using a combination of metal and woodworking.

Created by: Dying to Film. This project is made possible by ArtPlace America’s National Creative Placemaking Fund, awarded to Region Five Development Commission.
Artist Statement:
The Harvest Tables & Benches, custom made for Sprout, are all about having a great place to sit and converse with others over a freshly cooked meal. With both red oak and white oak being used on the tables and benches, plus the addition of metal frameworks, these tables show uniqueness in their grain, colors, and different natural mediums. Such visual differences beautifully bring this project together, much like Sprout's goal to bring people of different cultures and places together.

“Heart-A-Taco Salad”      Reci-Piece Project

The Recipe: “Heart-A-Taco Salad”

Ingredients:
1 of each of the following-
Head of lettuce
Tomato
Onion
Bag of shredded cheese
Packet of taco seasoning
Small jar of green olives
Can of kidney bean
Bottle of Thousand Island
Pound of hamburger
Bag of Taco Doritos
Story Behind the Recipe

My dad made many meals for us when I was growing up as he got off work an hour before my mom so it just made sense. His meals were easy, hearty, and easy to like, much like my dad. When I served this to a group of friends and shared that it had an ENTRIE BOTTLE of dressing in it, we dubbed it “heart-a-taco salad” as we figured it would give us a heart attack if we ate it too often. We ate this recipe often when I was living with my parents, and I now make it for my husband and child. We do cut down on some of the less healthy ingredients, such as the dressing, to save some calories but it is definitely a family favorite!
