Arlene coordinates Farm-to-School and Farm-to-Institution marketing within a six-county area, along with a region-wide experimental program in which CSA shares are provided to at-risk families as a preventative prescription to improve their health. She is currently helping to plan a value-added large-scale processing facility, educational demonstration kitchen and a year-round grower and makers marketplace in Little Falls.
Arlene never thought she would be a farmer. Now she co-owns The Farm on St. Mathias, near Brainerd, with her husband, Bob, and forged a vital new role promoting locally-grown foods in our schools, hospitals, and restaurants. She started a for-profit food hub, SPROUT, which now markets the berries and vegetables raised by more than 50 local growers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
